SDHSAA members to vote on constitutional amendments

PIERRE – High schools belonging to the South Dakota High School Activities Association will have a chance to vote on three proposed amendments to the association’s constitution. Sending the amendments to schools for their vote was approved at the association’s annual meeting April 22.

15 years ago May 2, 2011According to the 2010 U.S. Census Bureau figures Day County has the highest housing vacancy in the state at 31 percent. Some say it’s due to a high number of seasonal homes. Statewide and nationwide, the vacancy rate was 11 percent.

Working on the waterworks

The word “plumbing” comes from “plumbum,” the Latin word for lead. That’s a load of hooey. “Plumbum” clearly denotes someone who has a bum crack that is precisely vertical.

A wild turkey hunt at Harvey and Mel’s or three ghosts in the garage

Laughing when we drove into his farmyard, my generous farmer friend, Harvey Opitz, said, “Have at it,” as he retreated into his warm house. Blowing snow and low visibilities usually mean fall waterfowl hunting but these conditions made turkey hunting in Day County quite interesting.

Reminder about absentee voting for upcoming election

With the South Dakota Primary Election June 2, early voting season is starting. Since the candidate submission deadline was much shorter this year, it’s caused a back up with ballots and citizens haven’t been able to submit their vote.

Day County Ambulance replaces old stair chair

At the regular Day County Commissioner meeting April 21, Day County Ambulance Director Melissa Sackreiter gave an update on calls and some equipment that needs to be replaced. According to Sackreiter, the ambulance service was at 137 calls compared to last year which was 141.
In early April, Slade Owen started working for the Day County Sheriff’s Office as the newest deputy. Owen stated he grew up near Wilmot and spent time in the Enemy Swim and Waubay area as well while growing up. Owen previously worked for Marshall County as a deputy for three years. New deputy joins Day County Sheriff’s Office

Effective April 7, Slade Owen is the newest deputy for the Day County Sheriff’s Office. Slade stated he previously worked for Marshall County for three years, got certified and was a deputy. According to Slade, it was time for change, which is why he came to Day County.
