Years ago, I visited the parents of my high school English teacher. They lived and had farmed outside of Carroll, IA. At the time they had retired but still lived on the farm. Clarence was in his early 80s and shared a birthday with Ronald Reagan and Sylvia was just a few years younger.

Going antiquing while on a business trip

My wife and I took a business trip to St. Cloud, MN. She suggested that we leave early so that we could go antiquing. I learned long ago that “antiquing” is a code word for “shopping.”I used to think that “antiquing” meant making something new appear to be old.

There’s a new hire at Roslyn Event Center bar

Tami Eidahl will be the new bartender at Roslyn Event Center (REC). This was announced during the Roslyn City Council regular meeting Nov. 5. She will manage the bar for any events held in the REC and her compensation will come out of the proceeds from the bar on those evenings.

Kurkowski retires from South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks after 39 years

Thiry-nine years ago, Steve Kurkowski was asked if he could do some snow removal work at Pickerel Lake State Recreation Area by then-manager Lori Skadsen. He started out as part time and it slowly formed into his job full time.

Community Veterans Day celebration details set

A Veterans Day celebration will be held in Webster Nov. 11 at 9:30 a.m. at the armory. A local veteran will be the keynote speaker of the event, as well as readings and songs from Webster Area students to honor all veterans.

Roslyn Area Veterans Memorial on track for completion next year

Beginning three years ago Roslyn Area Veterans Memorial committee was formed with the goal of beautifying a section of recently demolished buildings along Main Street in Roslyn into a veterans memorial park for locals who dedicated their lives to the service.

Webster Armory addition bond struck down in school district election vote

Webster Area School District voted against passing a $12.5 million bond during the school district election Nov. 4 with school business manager Lori O’Farrell reporting the election results as 421, or 38.17 percent, voting in favor and 682, or 61.83 percent, voting against the bond.
