Richard Burns

Richard Burns, 89, died May 21, 2024 at Ava’s House, Sioux Falls from a long illness with multiple myeloma.

Celebration of life was July 27, 1 p.m. at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Waubay.

Richard (Dick) Raymond Burns was born April 30, 1935 to Raymond and Laura (Wenger) Burns. He grew up on a farm north of Waubay, overlooking Enemy Swim Lake. He attended country school in rural Waubay through the eighth grade and joined his father farming and raising cattle. He joined the Army National Guard and specialized as a marksman.

He married Arvyce “Cookie” Nelson, Nov. 16, 1962. He graduated from vo-tech school in Fargo, ND mechanics course. After graduation, they lived in Waubay. He enjoyed farming and returned to the farm to live after being a caretaker for his wife.

He enjoyed gardening, raising potatoes and sharing produce. He enjoyed birds and raising chickens, turkeys, geese, ducks, guineas and pheasants.

Survivors include his children, Laurie and Mike Barse, Paul Burns and Jamie Burns; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Kathleen Burns Salley; many nieces and nephews .

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; sisters, Delores Burns, Carol and Frank Weyh, Donna and Bob Albers, Janet and Eugene Pekarek; brothers, Jerry Burns, David and Susie Burns.
