Leo Washenberger

Leo Alan Washenberger, 63, of Webster, died unexpectedly August 7, 2025 at his home south of Webster.

Services will be held on Thursday, September 11, 2025, 11 a.m. at Fiksdal Funeral Service in Webster with visitation one hour prior to service.

Leo was born on January 23, 1962 to David and Beverly (Buck) Washenberger. As a child he rode the Cass Clay truck and helped his dad deliver milk in the Day County area. He also took care of his sister Cindy (Vogl) while his mother Beverly was frequently getting her hair done at the salon. He worked on the farm helping haul bales and taking care of cattle.

In his teenage years he would be found with friends around the fire at Hedtke’s Pass on summer nights or the Polka Dot Bar. He married Bonnie Schmig, daughter of Roger and Mary (Bury) Schmig on October 31, 1984.

On January 1, 1985 they had a daughter Jessica. As a family they spent many weekends camping. One of his favorite spots was the east side camping area of Pickeral Lake. Shore fishing and ice fishing were one of his favorite past times. He would shore fish off the point on Blue Dog Lake.

He worked for several concrete construction crews before going to work at Mereen-Johnson Foundry in the fall of 1985. In his years spent at the foundry he gained the nicknames mud hog and wild man for his work in green sand.

The summer of 1999 he moved a trailer home to the Washenberger homestead where he was often visited by his daughter Jessica and her family and friends and lived out the rest of his life. Leo retired from the foundry and from then spent the rest of his time picking up side jobs and maintaining his land and homestead.

Leo loved music. Almost anytime someone would pull up to the house you could hear loud music. That’s how you knew he was home. He also loved to read. He would often be found in the middle of a book when you couldn’t hear him out on the backhoe or tractor.

Leo was known to be seen socializing at Pike’s or grabbing lunch at the local restaurants. During the summer he would be seen in his convertible with his favorite pup, a big golden retriever named Mook. He will be sadly missed by his family, grandchildren and friends.

Leo is survived by his brother Wayne (Lanette), sister Cindy (Brian), daughters Jessica (Matt), Julie and Taura. He is preceded in death by his parents, David and Beverly Washenberger and brother Wade Washenberger.

Fiksdal Funeral Service is entrusted with his arrangements.
