David Moen

David Moen, 80, Waubay, died July 25, 2026, at Prairie Lakes Hospital, Watertown.

Funeral service was July 31, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Waubay. Interment was at the Lakewood Cemetery.

David “Dave” Orrin Moen was born Aug. 26, 1945, in Webster to Gottfried and Maude (Brandon) Moen. He was baptized at Saron Lutheran Church and confirmed at Roslyn Lutheran Church. He grew up on a farm northwest of Rosyln and graduated from Roslyn High School in 1963. He joined the Army National Guard shortly after High School and served for six years. During that time, he moved to Minneapolis, MN and had several jobs, including road construction. In 1969 he started working for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company as a telephone installer, where he worked for 14 years.

While in Minneapolis he married Janice Nelson, Waubay. In 1982, they bought the Trading Post in Waubay and moved from Minneapolis to Waubay. They operated the store for nearly 20 years until Hwy. 12 was expanded to a four lane and the state bought and demolished the property. He was actively involved in the community serving on the Waubay School Board, Waubay City Council and participated in coffee room discussions with local farmers and residents.

He is survived by wife, Waubay; two children, Aaron and Heather Moen, Sioux Falls; Lori and Greg Kasuske, Twin Brooks; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister, Noreen Oliphant (Darrell), Conifer, CO; two nieces and one nephew and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Shirla Hawk and Judy Samuel; two nephews and his in-laws Edwin and Agnes Nelson.
