Charles Overby, 86, Milbank died April 3, 2025, at Peaceful Pines, Milbank.
Memorial services were April 15 at Mundwiler Funeral Home, Milbank. Burial was at Hope Lutheran Cemetery, Summit.
Charles Bruce Overby was born in Wilmot April 22, 1938. He grew up in Wilmot and attended Lake #2 School until second grade. He then attended Wilmot Public School, graduating in May 1956. He led the Wilmot Wolves to their first conference basketball championship and trip to the SD State ‘B’ basketball tournament and was an Eagle Scout. He attended Huron College one year, then transferred to Northern State Teachers College, Aberdeen, where he earned an associate degree in elementary education. In 1959, he began teaching in Amherst. In October 1959, he joined the North Dakota Air National Guard, serving six years as a medic. While serving in the Guard, he taught at Big Stone City and two years in Wilmot, where he was also assistant basketball and football coach.
He married Rosalie Westberg Nov. 23, 1961. They moved to Bloomington, MN, where he taught 11 years before becoming elementary principal in 1972. He completed his bachelor’s degree at Northern State Teachers College, master’s degree at Mankato State University and his sixth-year degree at the University of St. Thomas, St. Paul, MN. He spent 20 years in the classroom and 20 years as a principal, superintendent and director of special education including five years at Webster Elementary School.
He was a member of Lions Club, Kiwanis, American Legion Post 17 in Watertown and served 14 years as assistant and scoutmaster with the Boy Scouts. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. They spent many years living in Minnesota at their lake home, where they enjoyed gardening and fishing.
Survivors include his daughters, Jillene Overby, Shawnee, OK; Cori Beth Overby, South Haven, MN; sister, Jeannette Howell; several brothers-in-law, sistersin- law, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford and Edna Overby; his wife in 2016; two sisters, Sandra Thomas and Patricia Krell.
