Almon W. “Windy” Johnson Jr. of Watertown passed away Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2024 at the age of 90. Funeral service was held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2024 at the Wight & Comes Funeral Chapel in Watertown with visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial was at Mount Hope Cemetery in Watertown.
Pallbearers were Windy’s grandsons, Nathan Olson, Andy Olson and Kody Johnson; and friends, Terry Amy, Brent Zimmerman and Jake Zimmerman.
Windy was born on Nov. 27, 1933 at the family farm near Waubay. He was the fourth of seven children born to Almon W. Johnson Sr. and Jennie (Holm) Johnson. He graduated from Webster High School in 1952 and worked for National Tea grocery in Webster before entering the U.S. Army.
He returned to Webster to marry his high school sweetheart, Barbara Gustafson in Bristol on Oct. 24, 1954. They recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. After his honorable discharge Windy went to work for the Watertown Public Opinion newspaper, where he was employed for 41 years. After retirement he and Barb enjoyed traveling and spending winters in Arizona. Windy loved the outdoors and was known for his gardens, flowers, produce and caring for his lawn. He was attached to his riding mower.
Windy is survived by his wife, Barbara and his three children: Wendy (Matt) Olson, Kirk Johnson both of Watertown, and Kevin Johnson of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Kenneth, Donald (Buddy), Duane (Sonny) and Robert (Bobby); and sisters, Margaret (Bartos/ Delaney) and Barbara Jacobson; and several nephews and nieces.
