Katherine Birney, 58, Watertown, died Sept. 15, 2025, at Prairie Lakes Hospital, Watertown.
Funeral services were Sept. 22, 2025 at Fiksdal Funeral Service, Webster.
Katherine “Kathy” Ann Birney was born Aug. 11, 1967, to Dale and Yvonne (Lesnar) Birney at Webster. She was baptized and confirmed at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Waubay. She attended school in Waubay and graduated from WHS in 1985. After high school, she furthered her education at Northern State University, Aberdeen to study elementary education. After college, she returned to Waubay. In the fall of 2009, she moved to Jenkins Living Center, Watertown, where she resided until present time.
She enjoyed playing cards and games, watching soap operas and reality shows. She was awarded the “Greeting Award” at Jenkins for greeting those coming to visit with a smile and warm hello. She especially enjoyed family get-togethers and time spent visiting with each of them.
Survivors include her son, Bryan Birney, Waubay; her significant other, Dennis Sapp, Waubay; parents, Waubay; brothers, Steven Birney, Lake Norden; Scott and Angie Birney, Hayti; sister, Sheila Birney and Darin Nagelhout, Watertown; three nephews, three nieces, many aunts, uncles and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Keith Birney; sister, Stephanie Birney, maternal grandparents, Frank and Jeanette Lesnar; paternal grandparents, Ronald and Inez Birney and step-grandfather, Leonard Osterhoff.
