Dr. Stephen A. Carlson

Sept. 19, 1938 - Feb. 16, 2025

The man with the yellow umbrella, who walked the streets while reading a book and listening to 104.3 on his head set (while wearing his Tilly hat), has left us.

Steve passed away at Bethesda Home on Sunday, February 16th at the age of 86. He was born in Braham, MN and graduated from high school in Lansdale, PA. He graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College. He taught English in Windom, MN before entering the Army and serving in England (where he loved to say they spied on the Russians!).

He eventually received his Ph.D from the University of Minnesota and taught for 22 years at Mankato State in the field of Special Education.

He retired in 1997 and he and his wife moved to Webster. He has finally finished his novel (It took him 30 years of hard work and revisions), but it is not published yet!

He loved so many things: conversations with Fritz, the staff at Mike’s, visiting the gals at the insurance company, watching Wayne put in a new door, grinding beans for his dark roast coffee for only the first two cups, and listening to the farmers conversations at Julies. He was a great listener! He loved Cruising, especially through the Panama Canal and around the Horn, and living in London two summers and a winter sabbatical. He loved getting the New Yorker every single week for 20 years. He leaves his wife Carol, his daughter Laura, his son James and four wonderful grandchildren.

We are so thankful to the entire staff at Bethesda for their kindness and care the last 9 months. They will no doubt miss Steve’s sense of humor, special use of English teacher sentences, and of course, his beloved Tilly hat.
