Arlene Hovland, 98, Brookings, died Dec. 7, 2024, at a Brookings care center.
Funeral services were Dec. 12 at Hope Lutheran Church, Summit.
Arlene Oriette Davidson was born to Albert and Alma (Amundson) Davidson Oct. 5, 1926 on the family farm near Holmquist. She attended Gem School 153 in Lynn Township until 1938, when they moved to Ortley. She graduated from Waubay High School in 1945.
She married Oliver Hovland July 10, 1949, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Waubay. They lived in Ortley. She worked for several years at Day County Hospital, Webster. She and Oliver wintered in Arizona for 20 years. They moved to Heritage Village, Webster in 1999. Oliver died Oct. 1, 2001. She continued to reside in Webster until 2017, when she moved to an assisted living facility in Brookings and in 2019, she was transferred to a nursing home in Brookings where she lived at the time of her passing.
She was active in Waubay’s Mothers’ Club and PTA, Ortley’s Good Neighbor Club, school board and Ortley town board. She was active on the church council and held offices in the church women’s organization at Hope Lutheran Church, Summit. She enjoyed doing Hardanger embroidery and solving crossword puzzles. She went on several tours, including one to Norway in 1986.
Survivors include three sons, Waren and Denise Hovland, Brookings; Brad and Kris Hovland, Rapid City; Steve Hovland, Scottsdale, AZ; two granddaughters, two great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband; two sisters, Prudence and Dorothy; four brothers, Albin, Clarence, Lester and Scotty; infant sister, Christine and infant son, Mark Oliver Hovland.
