African savanna elephants have lost 60 percent of their population, while the African forest elephant has lost over 80 percent, becoming critically endangered, a trend likely to continue and be irreversible. Elephant populations have dropped to below 450,000. In comparison, South Dakota has approximately four million cattle and yet all of Africa can’t make room for a few elephants.
